Sawmill machinery that’s built to last, sold worldwide.

About Pinnancle SA

Pinnacle SA was founded by Neil Murrey. Neil created a company called Multi Saw, which was acquired by Woodmizer because of the excellent machine designs that Neil and his team developed. Seeing that the industry’s engineering design stagnated, Neil and his key team members, John Bernardo and Lara le Roux, set to work on designing a new generation of sawmill equipment.

They wanted to design machines that are easy to operate and maintain, without sacrificing production throughput. They would use parts that are easy to source and replace, making the sawmill equipment easy to operate while constructing the body of the machines out of heavy materials to ensure their machines are stable and could operate with a long lifetime to give customers the maximum opportunity to generate profit from their capital investment.

They encapsulated all of these attributes into a single design philosophy that they would use to design their new range of machines. They called it: New Era.

While the New Era design philosophy seems obvious and logical, it’s surprising how few machines are designed using this approach. Like they say, common sense is not so common. While complex control mechanisms work well for high-volume machinery, they add a layer of complexity that makes operating and maintaining machines in a sawmill more expensive. At Pinnacle SA, we believe that if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. We design the most cost-effective solution to get the job done.

What is New Era Design?

New Era is a design philosophy. We guarantee that we deliver uncomplicated, efficient solutions.

Every time you see the “New Era” badge on one of your sawmills, you can rest assured in the knowledge that we’ve applied the design philosophy to make your sawmill machinery and equipment easy to operate and maintain. Talk is cheap, so let’s break down exactly what we mean by sharing our design philosophy from a practical point of view.

40 years of sawmill equipment development has taught us to design with the intention to:

Design ApproachBenefit
Add only what is absolutely necessary. Use as few parts as possible. Fewer parts means fewer things that can break.
Manufacture using as few custom parts as possible. Source off-the-shelf components that are easy to fit. It’s easier to fix a machine if the parts you need can be sourced locally. It also brings down the cost of manufacturing the machine in the first place.
Use heavy components that are made for durability.Heavy components ensures machine stability and longevity.
Electronic controls and digital components have their place, but use them sparingly.By avoiding unnecessary complexity, Pinnacle machines are simple and easy to operate, so you don’t need to employ an engineer to operate or maintain your machines. Our approach removes the need for expensive training and expensive specialised labour.
Design with flexibility in mind. Allow for customisation where needed.Your operations are unique. We customise our machines to fit with your existing operations wherever possible to ensure continuity and minimal downtime.
Design intentionally. Understand what the machine needs to do and work your way towards a solution. The machine does what it’s intended to do effectively and efficiently.

Why do we call it New Era?

The New Era design philosophy was born from a need to step back from the sawmill manufacturing industry’s direction. The prevailing design philosophy maximises the machine manufacturers’ profits instead of customer satisfaction. Sawmill equipment manufacturers try to lock their customers into a long-term relationship by selling a sawmill that only the OEM can service because the parts are highly customised or patented.

This approach might work well in developed economies where parts are easy to source, but a different approach is necessary in emerging markets. For emerging markets, you’d want to use parts that are easy to source. You want to build machines that are easy to operate and maintain because highly specialised labour isn’t available.

That’s why the New Era matters. We believe that by employing simple design principles we will help change the entire industry. This might be a bold claim, but it’s derived from straightforward logic that’s easy to follow.

Why would you need to force a customer into a long-term relationship using parts and patents when you can build machines that work?

Why would customers buy a machine that costs more than the alternative? It doesn’t make business sense.

That’s why we believe our design philosophy is the dawn of a New Era! A New Era of simple design and easy machine operation. It is an era where any person who wants to apply themselves can learn to operate a machine, regardless of their education level. A New Era where entrepreneurs who want to operate sawmills or fix sawmills can start or expand their businesses knowing that they’ve bought a machine that will work well for years to come without getting milked by the OEM for every part they need to buy.

That’s why we created New Era! To change the way the industry works from the ground up.

Pinnacle-SA. Uncomplicated efficiency.

What problem do we solve?

Sawmills and lumber yards need machinery and equipment, but more often than not, the machinery and equipment on the market are designed for ultra-high volume or home use. There aren’t many great options on the market for regular throughput machinery because most manufacturers lock you into a relationship using highly specialised components that you can only source from the OEM. To make matters worse, most OEMs expect you to customise your facility to accommodate their equipment.

How does Pinnacle SA solve these problems?

Pinnacle SA manufactures high-quality sawmills and lumber yard equipment. Our design methodology prioritises easy operation and maintenance. Using our customer’s specifications, we design the most cost-effective solution to get the job done. Our machine layouts are adaptable and easily integrated into existing sawmill lines. We design machinery and equipment around your specific requirements. When we start the design process, we consider the following factors:

  • What facilities and equipment currently exist on-site?
  • We consider the timber size and species being processed.
  • We consider the final dimensions of the product being produced.
  • We take into account the production volumes required per shift.
